April 2023 Recap

April 2023 Recap

April was a busy month here at Cornelia Quick World Headquarters; according to my spreadsheet, I wrote almost 94,000 words (that’s total, not net – a lot of those words go away when editing); put 30 stand-alone stories and publication samples up on Medium; wrote 11 essays and reviews on the Eroticist’s Notebook; sent four eBooks out to Amazon, Smashwords, B&N, etc. (three of these came out or are coming out in May); and put 39 posts up on corneliaquick.blog (mostly links to Medium and Notebook articles, and book publications, so as to put everything in one place).

I’d say that constitutes being a busy gal!

The most important developments were getting into a good writing groove (I get the bulk of my work done early in the morning, usually between 5 AM and 6:30 AM, and then get a second wind around 8 PM), and setting up what I hope will be a sustainable publication cadence. I’ve also spent a little time strategizing; but as a student of literature, I’m well aware of what happens to the best-laid plans of mice, men, and eroticists, so all strategies are highly contingent. I was also able to make some connections with the incredibly helpful, welcoming, kind, and smart erotica writing community on Twitter, Medium, and Discord, and their support and wisdom have been invaluable in this journey.

Here are a few highlights that you might have missed if you weren’t following me as closely as I follow myself:

On Medium

My goal for Medium in April was two-fold: publish a story a day, and get to the magic 100 follower threshold. And I’m pleased to report that I managed both, though the first was definitely a slog at times. There were longer projects that I really wanted to work on but couldn’t because of my self-imposed deadline, and some of those daily stories have already grown into larger projects that I hadn’t anticipated. Here are some Medium pieces of mine that you may have missed, and that I think you’d like:

Vacation Pictures: Mia and Vanna are on a beach vacation; Vanna is a dedicated hotwife, while Mia is reluctant to cross that boundary, but is curious, and gets recruited to document Vanna’s escapades. I see this one growing into a longer work that explores both Mia’s fascination with Vanna’s lifestyle, and developments back home with the ladies’ husbands.

Erato and Morpheus: I’ve been using the characters of Patrick and his yet-to-be-named hotwife in several adventures on Medium; I expect this to grow into a picaresque collection as well. In this story, Patrick arranges a sensual gangbang after a tech conference at their favorite hotel. For some reason, the narrator-wife is really into allusions to Greek mythology; she keeps insisting on these references, and who am I to deny her?

Dave and Katie and Me: A roommates-to-lovers story where a couple becomes a throuple when Katie discovers that she needs two men to keep her satisfied. This story grew into Throuple, coming out on May 8; there are two more samples on Medium. (I should probably warn you that there’s a little bi-curious activity throughout – it’s very much a part of the story arc, but if that’s not your bag, there are plenty of other things of mine that might be.)

Panty Raid: Bobby Fitzgerald gets more than he bargained for when he’s caught trying to steal panties from Terrie’s laundry. This is a followup to a story of a supernatural conjuring gone wrong, and one that I see as part of a longer work that’s in the queue but maybe a little further out.

The Eroticist’s Notebook

I started the Eroticist’s Notebook on Substack as a place to show some of the behind-the-scenes processes, ideas, and inspirations that contribute to my stories. Most recently, it’s been focused on gangbangs: reading about them, writing about them, thinking about them. That’s a direction my stories are currently taking as part of my May plans, somewhat surprisingly.

The gangbang stories happened largely because of some reading I stumbled across, Hannah Wilde’s Hipster Gangbang series. These were fun and raunchy, and got me thinking of other settings where hipster gangbangs could happen. My first such story, Pinball Queen Gangbang (or The Pinball Queen’s Debauch, as the title has been tamed down for Amazon), hits he eBook retailers May 15.

eBook Publications

I was so consumed with my Medium story-a-day project that I didn’t have much time to work on longer stories for eBook publication. I released one at the end of the month, How I Won Spring Break, a story with a sassy heroin who makes the most of a change in her spring break plans and has some deliciously raunchy fun by the pool, on the beach, and in her neighbor’s condo.

On May 1, I released a collection of three gangbang stories, The Center of Attention, featuring sexy cowboys, strippers, and gym rats.

Throuple comes out May 8, and The Pinball Queen’s Debauch comes out May 15.

What the future holds

It’s risky to make big predictions about upcoming projects, release dates, etc., beyond what’s already locked in through May 15, but there are two big projects that I expect to launch later in May or early in June.

The first will be a series of short stories – 3-5,000 words each – inspired by the Hannah Wilde Hipster Gangbang stories. The Pinball Queen’s Debauch is sort of a part of this, though it’s a little longer and is being released widely. The rest of the stories will be a little shorter, and will be on Kindle Unlimited for 90 days after publication – I want to test the waters of KU,and I want to do it with a bang (so to speak). Likely topics include a garage band, a tattoo parlor, a pirate-themed amusement park, a beach volleyball game, and a car wash; I’ve already wrapped up and am currently editing one that happens while moving into a new apartment.

The second is a three story arc that I started on Medium with Into the Woods. The settings will range from an isolated campsite, to a casino hotel, to a wedding reception where everything is pulled together. I’m almost done with the first and well into the second, so a late May or early June release seems likely.

I’m also looking forward to building out the ideas I have for Vaction Pictures, and possibly returning to Cassie Snow. I have no shortage of ideas – the only thing holding me back is time!

Your work rate is phenomenal! If you have time to offer advice a budding writer I’d appreciate it. DM on twitter ok?

Absolutely! DMs are open, always happy to chat. Though I’m not sure I have any deep secrets; the basics are —

      1. I’m not writing great literature here, I’m just moving a story along quickly enough to get to the good parts while having some fun with the words. Letting go of expectations was huge in allowing me to just write: https://corneliaquick.substack.com/p/giving-the-people-what-they-want
      2. Setting aside a consistent time and place to write is key — for me, it’s early mornings before the house is awake, and just before bed when everyone is retreating to their own spaces.
      3. Writing time is writing time, not editing time — I let go of any worries about whether the words are any good and just let them out. I can edit later — I set aside one or two mornings for that — but you can’t edit what isn’t written. (I do tend to write with the grammar prompts on with NovelPad or Grammarly, so I can fix some glaringly obvious problems as I go, but I don’t worry about things like plot while I’m in writing mode.)
      4. Writing time is also not admin time, marketing time, etc. — I do those things at lunchtime.
      5. I go into each session with a goal, and usually some notes — I keep a doc of ideas and snippets of scenes and dialogue, and decide at the start which one I’m going to use for the session. Having those notes helps me to focus: my brain will sometimes say, “But Cornelia, we had a great idea yesterday, what if we forget it?” and I can say, “Brain, it’s all written down, we’ll look at that one tomorrow, now shut up and focus.”

There are some costs — my reading has suffered dramatically, and I haven’t watched a good horror movie in a couple of months — but I feel good about the progress I’m making, and having fun, which is probably the most important thing.

Such sage advice, thank you for sharing. I am new to this but having a blast. Maybe one day I can make a little money too.

Having fun is more important at this point, I think, than making money; I’m having a little success with Medium – $7 last month, $5 so far this month, but it was a slog getting to the paid tier. And I make $10-15 a month on book sales. So this hobby pays more than my other hobbies, but it’s still running at a loss when I put on my accountant hat.

That is good to know. At least you have created something that will last forever.
