I’m planning to release some titles to Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited in a couple of weeks, and I’ve got somewhat mixed feelings about it. I want to experiment with KU’s model, which pays authors for page reads on titles that are exclusive to Amazon and available only to KU subscribers, even though most of my book sales are through Smashwords and Apple Books.
I’ve recently started a Ream page, where I’m selling books by subscription, and so as a little experiment with that I’ve added a subscription tier that I call “Ahead of the Curve.” If you subscribe to this tier, at $6 a month, you get the following:
- Access to all of my widely-published eBooks
- Access to exclusive member-only stories
- Limited time access to titles destined for Kindle Unlimited
That’s right — for a week or so before they go to KU, these titles can be read only by Ream subscribers. When they go on KU, they’ll disappear from Ream — titles must be exclusive to KU during the first 90 days. After 90 days, these titles will be widely released, and will return to Ream, where they’ll be available to all subscription levels.
The first title to get his treatment is “Mashed on Moving Day,” a delightfully raunchy story about four movers, one vibrator, and some missing pizzas and beer. It was inspired by Hannah Wilde’s Hipster Gangbang stories, true masterpieces of the genre. Check out a sample, “Testing the Terminator,” on Medium — this is from right before things get really hot, so if you want to see what Nikki gets up to with Keith, Jim, Mickey, and Dave, head over to Ream and sign up!
